"A new world calls for a new man" - that was the message with which Yves Klein, in the mid 1950s, took the international art world by storm. The young artist's ejtfcrâvagant personality and unique style had captivated Paris from his first appearance on the scene. The blue paintings - large-format canvases, sheer, meditation-inspiring surfaces suffused with the deepest hue of the sky - rapidly made him famous as "Yves - le Monochrome" far beyond the borders of France. Yet they were only the beginning of a universal quest. Perhaps sensing that his life was destined to be short - he died in 1962, at the age of 34 - Klein created över a thousand paintings in the coürse of only seven years. His oeuvre has since been reeognized as a elassieal aehievement of modern art, firmly rooted in the Western artistic tradition and yet a source of stili unexhausted innovative poten-tial.
