P>This book has come about as a result of a number of seminars and workshops in Turkey and Sweden. The first such events took place at the Middle East Technical University in Ankara during the fall of 1998, and was immediately followed by a seminar at the Swedish Research Institute in Istanbul. These events were associated with the visit by some of the Swedish contributors to this volume to Turkey in order to present Swedish family and gender research to Turkish students and faculty.
